Diamond Earrings: A Guide to Studs, Drops and Choosing Diamonds

Diamond earrings are the piece people reach for most, because they suit almost everything and go from day to evening without a thought. Caleums makes them in 18K gold with natural and lab-grown diamonds. Here is a short guide to the styles and what to look for.
The main styles
- Studs. A single diamond at the lobe. The everyday classic, and the easiest first pair. Size is the main choice.
- Drops. A stone or cluster that hangs below the lobe, for more movement and presence in the evening.
- Hoops. Diamonds set along a hoop, from small huggies to larger statement sizes.
Choosing the diamonds
Because earrings sit away from close inspection, colour and clarity can be a touch more relaxed than on a ring without the eye noticing. Cut still matters, since it drives the sparkle. For studs, matching the two stones well is what makes a pair look right.
Natural or lab-grown. We offer both. They are chemically identical, so it comes down to preference and budget. Lab-grown buys a larger pair for the same spend.
Settings and backs
Claw settings show the most light around each stone. For studs worn daily, a secure back matters as much as the diamond: screw backs hold best, while friction backs are quicker on and off.
Metal
We work in 18K gold: white to keep the focus on the diamond, yellow or rose to add warmth.
