Lab-grown vs natural diamonds: an honest guide for UAE buyers
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond: the same carbon crystal as a natural one, with the same hardness and sparkle. It is grown in weeks rather than formed over geological time. The practical differences are price, rarity and certificates, and which one suits you depends on what you want the stone to mean.
We set both, and every Caleums piece with lab-grown diamonds says so on its product page. Here's how we'd help a friend choose.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is pure carbon crystallised in the same structure as a mined diamond, with the same chemical and physical properties (Wikipedia, "Synthetic diamond"). It is not a simulant. Cubic zirconia and moissanite are different materials that only look similar. Lab-grown stones are made by one of two methods, high pressure–high temperature (HPHT) or chemical vapour deposition (CVD). A gem laboratory can tell them apart from natural stones with specialist equipment; the eye can't.
The real differences
| Natural diamond | Lab-grown diamond | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Carbon crystal | The same carbon crystal |
| Origin | Formed in the earth, mined | Grown in a laboratory |
| Rarity | Finite and rare, especially in larger sizes | Can be produced to order |
| Price for the same size and quality | Higher | Considerably lower |
| Certificate | GIA and other labs grade natural stones | Labs also grade lab-grown stones; the report states the origin |
| Disclosure | — | Should always be named as lab-grown (every Caleums lab-grown piece is) |
What the price difference looks like at Caleums
Two of our pieces, each with 2 carats of diamond in total, show it plainly:
- Caleums Cloud Necklace: a 2 ct lab-grown diamond in white gold, floating on a transparent thread. AED 7,900 including VAT.
- 1 Carat Pear Diamond Studs: two 1 ct natural pear diamonds, D colour, VVS clarity, in 18K white gold. AED 55,950 including VAT.
They are different designs, and one stone of 2 ct is not the same as two of 1 ct. But the gap shows why lab-grown lets the same budget go much further.
When we'd suggest natural
- You want rarity and the story of a stone formed in the earth. For many families in the Gulf that still matters, especially for a bride's jewellery.
- You're buying a smaller, high-grade stone. At 0.30–0.50 ct the price gap is smaller in AED terms. Our Solitaire Diamond Single Stud holds a 0.30 ct natural diamond, E colour, VVS clarity, GIA certified, for AED 3,005. The Hidden Orbit Ring has a 0.50 ct natural pear diamond, D colour, VVS clarity, GIA certified, for AED 9,250.
- You'd like a certificate from GIA. Our natural diamonds described as GIA certified come with their certificate.
When we'd suggest lab-grown
- You want a bigger or whiter centre stone for an engagement ring. Our Signature Oval, a lab-grown oval in 18K gold, is AED 4,465.
- The diamonds are many and small, as in pavé. Lab-grown keeps the price of silver pieces accessible, like our covers for WHOOP® from AED 1,995 (Ivy Leaf).
- The design needs a custom cut. Our Spirit of the Seven Emirates has a lab-grown centre custom-cut in the shape of the UAE, surrounded by seven natural baguette diamonds. A piece can use both.
Certificates: what to ask for
- The lab and the report number. A grading report should name the stone's origin (natural or laboratory-grown), with its carat weight, colour, clarity and cut.
- A girdle inscription. Ask if the report number is laser-inscribed on the stone's girdle. That lets you match the stone to its report.
- At Caleums, natural diamonds on pieces described as GIA certified come with their GIA certificate. Lab-grown centre stones from 1 ct come with an IGI grading report; small accent stones are not individually certified. We don't publish report numbers on the website; ask us before you buy.
Our promise
Every Caleums piece set with lab-grown diamonds says so on its product page. If a page doesn't name the diamond type, ask us before you buy. If you're unsure which to choose, ask us on WhatsApp. We'll show you both side by side within your budget.

Frequently asked questions
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. They are carbon crystals with the same chemical and physical properties as mined diamonds. They are not simulants such as cubic zirconia.
Can you tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one by eye?
No. A gem laboratory needs specialist equipment to tell them apart, which is why a grading report that states the origin matters.
Does Caleums use natural or lab-grown diamonds?
Both. Pieces with lab-grown diamonds say so on the product page. Natural diamonds on pieces described as GIA certified come with their GIA certificate, and lab-grown centre stones from 1 ct come with an IGI report.
Can I choose lab-grown for a bespoke engagement ring?
Yes. We make engagement rings to order in 18K gold or platinum with either a natural or a lab-grown centre stone.
